Terms of service

The deal between us, in plain English.

Use Totaled honestly. Verify what you publish. We provide the platform, you bring the truth. The full terms follow.

Last updated: 2026-05-06

01 · What Totaled is

A verified vehicle data layer.

Totaled creates a public record for every repair logged by a real shop, proven by a real payment, attached to a real VIN. We provide the platform, the verification system, the public record, and the API. We do not own your vehicle, we do not broker transactions, we do not take title.

02 · Your account

One person, one account, real email.

  • You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
  • One human, one account. Shops can have multiple shop accounts.
  • The email on the account is the source of truth. We send claim updates and recall alerts there.
  • You are responsible for what gets done from your account. Sign out on shared devices.

03 · What you can do

Use it like the public record it is.

  • Look up any VIN. Public.
  • Claim a vehicle you own. Photo plus registration verification.
  • Log services, attach receipts, request recalls.
  • Make a buyer offer through the anonymous relay.
  • Pull a buyer report. $19.99 per VIN, or annual subscription.
  • Use the API. Free tier is 60 requests per minute per IP.

04 · What you cannot do

The lines we will enforce.

  • Claim a vehicle you do not own.
  • Log fake service records or alter an existing record dishonestly.
  • Scrape the API beyond your rate limit, or pretend to be a different actor.
  • Use Totaled to harass, dox, or stalk. Identity behind a VIN stays private.
  • Resell your buyer report to third parties.
  • Operate as a competing data broker using scraped Totaled data.

Violations get one warning, then account termination. Fraud gets immediate termination and possible referral to law enforcement.

05 · Service records and edits

The audit trail is the product.

Every record carries a trust tier (1 through 6). Edits trigger an entry in the audit log. The original is never destroyed. If you find an inaccurate record on a vehicle you own, request correction through your garage. The shop that logged it can also amend, but every amendment is visible.

06 · Buyer offers and shop quotes

Totaled facilitates, never brokers.

Offers and quote requests route through Totaled's anonymous email relay until both sides reveal identity. We do not hold funds in escrow, we do not take a commission, we do not take title. The transaction is between you and the other party. We are not responsible for what happens after introduction.

06b · SMS messaging

Texts only when you opt in.

By providing your phone number and checking the SMS opt-in box, you authorize Totaled to send transactional text messages to that number related to your quote requests, claim status, and recall alerts. Messages may be delivered via an automated system. Consent is not a condition of using the platform. Frequency varies, typically zero to five messages per quote thread. Standard message and data rates apply from your carrier. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help. We log every opt-in with timestamp, IP, and the disclosure shown to you, as required by US carrier A2P 10DLC rules. We are not responsible for carrier delivery failures, delays, or unsupported devices.

07 · Payments

Stripe handles the money.

Buyer reports, founding-shop subscriptions, and any future paid features run through Stripe. Refunds are case-by-case within 30 days. We do not store your card. Stripe Connect manages shop payouts for verified payment-rail attestation.

08 · Your data, your rights

You own what you logged.

Service records, photos, and notes you log belong to you. By posting them publicly through Totaled, you grant Totaled a non-exclusive license to display, distribute via API, and aggregate them into the public record for that VIN. If you delete your account, your personal information leaves. Service records remain attached to the VIN, anonymized, because the public record outlives any single account. See privacy policy.

09 · Disclaimers

What we are and are not.

Totaled provides information about vehicles, repairs, and recalls. We do not provide mechanical advice, vehicle valuations as financial advice, or warranties about a vehicle's condition. The Totaled Score, value estimate, and trust tiers are signals based on the data we have, not guarantees. Verify everything before making a purchase decision.

10 · Limitation of liability

The legal floor.

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Totaled is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the platform. Our maximum liability for any claim is the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

11 · Termination

How accounts end.

You can delete your account anytime from settings. We can suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms. Either side can terminate for any reason with 30 days notice. Public service records survive account termination because the public record outlives the account.

12 · Governing law

Colorado courts, US federal law.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes go to state or federal court located in Denver County, Colorado.

13 · Changes

If we update these terms.

Material changes get 30 days notice to every account by email. The last-updated date at the top reflects the current version. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the new terms.

14 · Contact

Questions or formal notices.

Email nikrangwani@gmail.com. Legal notices to the same address until we publish a registered agent.
